More than 160 keen golfers chipped in with £15,000 for charity when the 2010 Second City Golf Classic returned to Little Aston Golf Course near Sutton Coldfield.

With a staggering entry of 42 teams raising funds on behalf of the Arthritis Research Campaign and the Norman Laud Association the annual event – in its 44th year - was hailed as one of the best yet.

This year the prestigious charity event welcomed back as sponsors Spire Little Aston Hospital. They celebrated their return in style as the winners of the Rod Davies Memorial Bowl were The Three Spires, one of Spire Little Aston’s teams, supported by their pro Craig Swinburn.

The Golf Professional prize went to Matt Morris, from Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, who shot a gross 65 for the day on a beautifully prepared course.

The event, the Midlands’ premier charity golf tournament, raised a staggering £15,000 for the chosen charities. Pictures from the day can be viewed on www.second-city.org. The tournament returns to Little Aston Golf Club next year and entry forms can be downloaded from the website.

Peter Skerritt hands over as tournament director to Jilly Cosgrove, managing director of Barques Design, for 2011. Peter is taking time out to visit Australia.

A Sutton Coldfield based association for disabled children and their families has been boosted by the generosity of local professional and amateur golfers from the business community who clubbed together and donated over £5200 out of the final proceeds of the 2008 Second City Charity Golf Classic Pro-Am Tournament held at Moor Hall golf club.

The Norman Laud Association in Sutton Coldfield provides day and domiciliary respite care for children and adults with special needs. The association began 46 years ago when local councillor, Norman Laud set up a nursery for disabled children.

Honorary Tournament Director of the Second City Charity Golf Classic, Peter Skerritt said,
“Ours is the Midlands’ premier annual charity golf tournament with our 43rdd annual tournament due to tee off this July. Last year we raised money for both Norman Laud and Arthritis Care because their work is both incredible and vital. We are always privileged to lend a helping hand to this sort of charity and thanks to our sponsors and the business community who always enjoy a fantastic day’s golf, we are able to contribute to organisations such as Norman Laud.”

Sian Pemberton from Norman Laud said,
“Second City Golf Tournaments Limited have given us support over a number of years now. Their commitment to and passion for our work is very much appreciated by the children and their families and they have helped us to expand our services because of their donations. Many of our guests are profoundly disabled so the need to offer carers this support is essential especially as the association has to rely on fundraising to maintain its services.”

This year’s Second City Charity Golf Classic is being held at Moor Hall Golf Club on Wednesday 15th July, 2009.
